Europe welcomes visitors 365 days a year, but not surprisingly, its peak season runs for the summer duration between June and August. With warmer climates and long days where, in certain parts, the sun doesn’t set until 10pm, Europe looks its shiniest come summer.

What’s the cheapest way to get to Europe?

It’s the million-dollar question, but you may be surprised to know that, answered correctly, it’s also a million-dollar saving too. Well, not quite, but follow these simple tips and you’ll still be ‘quids-in’.

                • Fly ‘open jaws’ - Airport fees and taxes vary considerably from one destination to the next, so by flying into one city and out of another, you could save a few sneaky dollars.
                • Get flexible - Flight prices summit and plummet depending on the day of the week, time of year and upcoming holidays or events. Get frugal, get flexible, it’ll save you bucks.
                • Travel off-season - Much of Europe is enticing year-round, but in general, October through April are the cheapest months to fly. Go then!

The 4 things you need to know:

                1. Off or ‘low season’ is usually defined as November to March, with the most cost-effective flights, tours and packages available to buy months earlier (try to book at least three months in advance).
                2. Shoulder season is a happy compromise (European autumn and spring) and includes September as well as May, but be mindful of events and their host nations, such as The Olympics or even an FA (soccer) cup final, which will elevate prices.
                3. Sign up for Mix and Match email alerts and you’ll receive up-to-the minute flight prices as and when they reach market. Snap them up quickly as they’re usually limited in quantity and sell out quickly.
                4. Low season doesn’t equate to ‘worst season’. Europe has some particularly alluring winter events which make destinations more-than-magical. Dark nights make for a spectacular Halloween, Bonfire Night, German Christmas markets, which start as early as November, and Amsterdam's glittering Light Festival (November - January).
