Holidays On The Up

Many of us tend to be influenced by other people’s recommendations about something new before we try it. It may be a touch of the risk/reward factor. The same can be said when selecting your next travel destination. But you know, sometimes it’s just about taking a small step into the unknown and embracing the adventure of something new or different.

According to Stats NZ - Australia, The US, Fiji, the UK and the Cooks Islands were the top five destinations of choice for Kiwis in 2015. Short breaks recharge holidays with the chance to enjoy a bit of well- earned relaxation seemed to be the norm. It’s the ease of a short 3- 4 hour flight to a Pacific paradise that makes Island holidays so attractive whereas the decreasing price of travel for the longer haul journeys to the US and UK is fuelling an increase to these destinations.

With the opening up of more travel routes and carriers pricing more competitively 2016 is shaping up as year to branch out in your travel plans and perhaps try somewhere new.

Although not a new destination, with the introduction of Hawaiian Airlines flying direct Auckland to Honolulu the ease of getting there from NZ is beginning to resonate with travellers. From its lush scenery and active volcanic regions to its pristine sandy beaches and the rich local culture and culinary delights to explore – Hawaii is a holiday you will never forget.

If you’re looking for somewhere that truly encapsulates the idea of undiscovered treasure then consider The Philippines. Breath-taking and sublime in their beauty this collection of more than 7,000 islands remains a holiday that takes discovery to a whole another level.

Many Kiwis make their way through Europe as a rite of passage on their OE. With Italy being a long-time favourite. Although there has been a trend of moving past the more well-known places and into the Amalfi Coast where neighbouring Malta is fast becoming a cultural must-see. Slovenia is also being touted for its soaring peaks and valleys flecked with toy town houses and glacial lakes. Perfect for those who are looking to explore Alpine territory.

For those not so keen on long haul flying, cruises have been seeing a significant upward trend with offerings throughout Australia, Europe and Asia.
